WARNING BACTERIAL MENINGITIS IS A LIFE & DEATH EMERGENCY
Know the
signs and symptoms of Meningococcal and Pneumococcal Meningitis and how to
prevent it. It can save your life. Bacterial Meningitis and Meningococcemia
are serious emergency.
Meningitis
Symptoms
Infants and Children
A high-pitch whimpering,
moaning or crying.
Dislike of being handled.
Fretful arching back.
Neck retraction.
Refusing feeds or vomiting.
All Can
have these.
Blank, staring expression .
Difficult to wake up or very lethargic.
Fever & may have cold hands & feet.
Pale, blotchy skin color.
Unrelenting fever
Sensitivity to light
Cold feet or hands
Nausea or vomiting
Joint pain
A
RED/PURPLE RASH bleeding under the skin.
Go to the closest hospital Emergency
Room immediately.
It will look like little red pin pricks,
hickeys, or purplish bruises.
Preventives
Don't SMOKE some experts believe that
smokers carry/harbor the bacteria (therefore can become ill or pass the
bacteria to others) and infants, children and young adults exposed to second
hand smoke may be at a higher risk.
Don't share drinks, food, eating utensils, tooth brushes with others, even
family members.
Young adults should refrain from alcohol.
Cover your mouth with your hand or Kleenex when you cough.
Avoid public water fountains (if these have to be used teach children the
proper way to use them, make sure they are in good working order and clean. )
Avoid containers of ice,
water or other liquids where several people are dipping with cups or hands.
Wash your hands frequently.
Do not share sports bottles or sweat towels.
Brush yours and your children's teeth 2-3 times a day.
Do not let children share candy, plastic toys that have not been cleaned
properly, bottles, drinking cups, eating utensils. Wash their hands several
times a day. Wipe noses when cold or allergy is present.
Make sure these preventives are expressed to your day care provider or school.
After Meningitis
Meningitis not only kills and destroys its victims
lives but it devastates and
destroys the lives of Angel families and friends.
Many times families end in financial ruin, divorce, and even sometime
suicide.
