Daniel R. Mason
I
was born February 2,1973. In all aspects I was a bouncing healthy baby boy.
Somewhere around being 10 weeks old I fell ill. I was taken to my pediatrician
where he first diagnosed me as having bronchitis. my older brother had a case of
it at the time. I was sent home with meds this was a Friday. Over the weekend I
did not improve and was taken back to the doctor on Monday. On further
examination the doctor noticed that I was getting sunset eyes . the frontal lobe
of my head was beginning to swell. the pressure on the brain was causing my eyes
to be pushed back into my head ( sunset eyes) . I was then rushed to St
Elizabeth's hospital in Beaumont Texas where a spinal tap was performed. the
spinal tap came out cloudy signifying I had meningitis. later test confirmed a
strain of bacterial meningitis. I was then placed in the hospital and started on
a regiment of antibiotics. the antibiotics did not seemed to help. It was then
decided that I must under go brain surgery. first a hole was drilled into the
back right side of my head. a abscess was discovered and drained. upon draining
the first abscess another was discovered. from this point it was decided that a
incision would be made to open up my head. a horse shoe shape incision was made
on the right side of my head. the second abscess was drained. a third abscess
was then discovered. according to my team of doctors. this was in a critical
place of the brain. they felt that if it was better to treat it with
antibiotics. trying to remove it could render me hemiplegics. when I came out of
surgery I was in very critical condition. My mom stated half way through the
surgery the head doctor came out and cried . He did not think I was going to
make it. during the healing I suffered from seizers. They were treated with meds
and I was ok. the doctors stated that if I lived I would probably be in a
vegetative state. they also figured I would be blind. my mom knew I wasn't
blind. one day she saw me pick up a brown pacifier off a brown coffee table. she
knew then I could see some. the extent of my health problems were not ruled out
till I was about 5 years old. I am now 30 years old. I have no peripheral vision
in the left side of my left eye. the optic nerve was damaged. I actually have
no peripheral vision in my right eye but because of the way the brain works I am
only effected in my left eye. I also have a slight learning disability. other
than that I am pretty much ok. being that I LOVE to talk I always find the thing
about me possibly being in a vegetative state kind of funny. I love to remind my
self of this. I had an aunt who always referred to me as the miracle child. well
I hope that my story can help bring comfort to those who need it.
Sincerely,
Daniel R Mason
Oh Danny Boy
Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountain side
The summer's gone and all the leaves are falling
It's you, it's you, must go and I must 'bide
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
I'll be here in sunshine and in shadow
Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so
But when you've come if all the flow'rs are dying
And if I am dead, and dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" over for me
And I shall hear tho' soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer sweeter be
And you will call and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace 'til you come to me
Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so.
