CoMO Press Release: Meningitis causes death, disability and family destruction worldwide. It is no respecter of country boundary, age or wealth. Young or old; north, south, east or west; rich or poor – everyone is vulnerable, with young children especially so. The number of cases of bacterial meningitis varies widely around the world and some forms are epidemic in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Information on the signs and symptoms of the disease and the action to take, along with the use of those vaccines which are available, is also variable – so children and young people die or are disabled needlessly. The Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO) was formed in 2004 to bring together local organisations from all over the world who are speaking out to raise awareness about the disease and the need to be vaccinated, and to amplify those voices. It now has members in 19 countries across Europe, North and South America, Australia, the Philippines and Africa. CoMO is promoting Saturday 25th April 2009 as World Meningitis Day when we ask everyone to join hands against meningitis to draw attention to this disease and its devastating effects. You can do this locally by contacting a meningitis organisation in your area – their details are on the CoMO website www.comoonline.org – who will welcome your support. Or you can join hands in a global virtual community on the CoMO website. Whatever you do on the day, be sure to ask your physician about vaccination against meningitis. |
